This posting is about how to be a powerful influence to change you by talking to yourself. In the world of positive mental attitude, positive thinking, and affirmations; we began to speak out loud to ourselves with the goal of reprogramming our thinking. This is a common way to begin changing your mind set.
Observation
Many become discouraged after speaking their affirmations on a daily basis and without seeing any results.
Some thoughts are conflicting when speaking affirmations. These thoughts state things as:
Am I lying to myself? Is this really working? How long is it going to take?
One of the reasons this becomes a dilemma because what they say on the outside is many times not reflective of what is actually being said in the mind. Before learning to speak affirmations it is a good thing to identify the speech pattern of the person you listen to most of the time, which is yourself. That is where the change must begin, internally.
Problem
Of course we can continue to speak in an attempt to talk our inner mind into submission. The problem with this tactic is that the inner mind will act like a child who covers its ears and says, “La La La La La La” in an attempt to drown out what is being spoken externally. It is amazing that in most endeavors to change we start within and yet in this case we attempt to make the change by an outside action first.
Change of Strategy
Often we began speaking words before the mind is prepared to actually take action on the phrases we use. We have not adjusted our thoughts and therefore we do not have internal agreement with our inner mind on what we are saying externally. I would like to suggest steps to what I believe are vital to prepare our mind to make the most of the change in speech pattern.
-
1-Pick a phrase that makes sense to you. It really does not matter whether someone else accepts or understands your phrase.
-
2-Think about the phrase and what it means to you. It cannot be something abstract. Your phrase has to have a meaning to you.
-
3-Associate the phrase with the picture of the end result you desire; in other words when you make the change you desire what will you look like?
-
4-The simpler you keep the phrase the better your inner mind adapts to it. This also means the phrase is a memorable to you.
-
5-Take a pen and paper and write the phrase in different words. You may find a phrase using more descriptive words.
-
6-Before saying the phrase out loud, whisper it to yourself. It is your secret that you may choose to share with others or not. We are naturally drawn to secrets.
-
7-Picture the phrase in your mind and commit it to memory. This means to actually picture the letters of the words and the phrase itself.
-
8-Associate the phrase with feelings of happiness and joy. Connecting the phrase with pleasant thoughts becomes something your mind desires and looks forward to seeing come to pass.
If you will take these steps prior to beginning an ongoing program of speaking affirmations, you will prepare for increased opportunity for success by removing the internal conflict.
Do you agree? Please share a comment of ways you have successfully used affirmations. Tell me why you believe it was successful?

Wisdom for the Ages
Affirmations are indeed a powerful tool to condition our minds. However in my experience, we must allow change upon ourselves. Without this willingness, any affirmations will go in vain.
